THE “OPTICAL ILLUSION” STUDIO PUZZLE: HOW MANY CHAIRS ARE REALLY THERE?

This brain teaser has confused thousands of people because it combines perspective with a mirror reflection. At first glance, you might count several chairs around the table, plus a tiny chair sitting on the tabletop. The standing mirror adds another layer of confusion by reflecting part of the scene, making it easy to mistake reflections for additional objects.

A key detail is that a mirror doesn’t create new chairs—it only reflects the ones already in the room. If you’re counting the actual physical chairs, you should ignore anything that appears only in the mirror. The miniature chair on the table is also a real object, even though it’s much smaller than the others.

Some viewers argue there are only 4 chairs, believing the chair behind the table is actually part of a clever perspective illusion. Others count 7 by including every chair shape visible in the image, including the reflected chairs inside the mirror. That approach counts reflections as separate objects, which they are not.

The most accurate answer depends on what the puzzle is asking. If the question is “How many chairs are really there?”, reflections shouldn’t be counted because they aren’t additional physical chairs. If the puzzle instead asks you to count every chair image you can see—including reflections—the total would be 7. That’s why this optical illusion continues to spark debate, with the wording of the question being just as important as the image itself.
