The Timeless Tool That Reflects the Ingenious Resourcefulness of the Past

At first glance, this strange vintage metal object might look like industrial equipment or an unusual piece of kitchen décor. In reality, it served a simple but useful purpose: it was a bottle-drying rack, historically known in French as an *égouttoir à bouteilles* or *hérisson*, meaning “hedgehog.”

The rack was designed to hold glass bottles upside down so water could drain while air circulated around them. Its multiple levels and metal prongs allowed several bottles to be washed and dried at the same time, making it especially useful in homes, wineries and other places where bottles were regularly reused.

Its unusual vertical design was both practical and efficient. By keeping bottles elevated and separated, the rack helped prevent water from collecting inside and allowed them to dry more quickly. The sturdy metal construction also made it durable enough for repeated everyday use.

Today, vintage bottle-drying racks are popular with collectors and antique enthusiasts. Some are still used for their original purpose, while others have been repurposed as rustic organizers for mugs, cups and jars or simply displayed as decorative pieces. What looks like a mysterious metal “tree” was actually a clever solution to an everyday problem: drying multiple bottles at once.
