It may seem harmless to hang a kitchen towel over the oven handle while cooking. It is convenient, easy to reach and something many people do without giving it much thought. However, because the towel sits close to a significant heat source, the fabric can gradually become dangerously hot. Cotton, linen and microfiber towels can scorch, smolder or even ignite under the right conditions, especially if they are left in place while cooking. A distraction or forgotten towel can make the situation even more dangerous.

There is another risk that is easy to overlook: a towel can interfere with the oven door. If it becomes folded, bunched up or trapped near the door, it may prevent the door from sealing properly. Even a small gap can allow heat to escape, making it harder for the oven to maintain a consistent temperature. The result can be unevenly cooked food, longer cooking times or baked goods that fail to rise as expected.

A hanging towel can also pose a hazard to children and pets. A toddler might grab and pull on the towel, potentially opening a hot oven door or causing cookware to shift. Pets can similarly become caught on a loose towel and pull it down. These seemingly minor situations can quickly become dangerous, particularly in a busy kitchen where hot surfaces and cookware are nearby.

The safest solution is simple: keep kitchen towels away from the oven and other heat sources. Wall hooks, dedicated towel racks, magnetic hooks positioned away from heat, or towel loops on an apron can keep towels within easy reach without creating unnecessary risks. An oven handle may seem like the perfect place for a kitchen towel, but convenience does not always mean safety. The next time you reach for one while cooking, think twice before hanging it there.
