Try These Hacks When Your Key Fob Stops Working

Walking up to your car, pressing the key fob, and getting no response can be frustrating, but it doesn’t always mean there’s a serious problem. If the doors remain locked and the lights don’t flash, one of the most common causes is a weak or dead fob battery. Before you panic, there are a few simple things you can try to regain access to your vehicle.

Most modern key fobs include a hidden mechanical key. Look for a small release button or slider on the side or back of the fob, then remove the metal key and use it to unlock the driver’s door manually. If the battery is weak rather than completely dead, you can also try holding the fob close to your chin while pressing the button. This so-called “chin trick” may sometimes extend the signal slightly, although results can vary.

If you get inside but the vehicle still won’t start, don’t assume you’re stuck. Many push-button vehicles have an emergency detection system that can recognize the key fob even when its battery is depleted. Try holding the fob directly against the start button or the specific backup location described in your owner’s manual, then press the brake and start button.

The best solution is preparation. Keep a compatible spare coin-cell battery, such as a CR2032 when specified by your vehicle, and avoid exposing the key fob to extreme heat or cold. Most importantly, check your owner’s manual for the exact emergency procedures for your model. The next time your key fob suddenly stops responding, take a breath, try the manual key or emergency-start method, and stay calm. A little preparation can save you a lot of unnecessary stress.
