According to Coin Trackers, the New York Post, KHOU, and the Daily Mail UK, a rare 1943 copper wheat penny in exceptional condition could be worth more than $85,000. These coins are highly sought after by collectors because they were produced as a result of an unusual minting error during World War II.

In 1943, the U.S. Mint changed the composition of pennies because copper was needed for wartime purposes. According to KHOU, which consulted Royal Coin and Jewelry, a Houston dealer specializing in rare coins, pennies that year were made from steel and coated with zinc to help prevent rust.

CoinWeek explains that all 1943 cents were intended to be struck on zinc-coated steel planchets. However, a small number of copper blanks apparently entered the minting process by mistake, creating the rare 1943 copper cents that collectors continue to seek today.

Because so few of these error coins are known to exist, authentic 1943 copper wheat pennies can command significant prices. Coins in exceptional or mint condition are especially valuable, with some examples reportedly reaching the $85,000 range or even higher depending on their authenticity, condition, and market demand.
