For most people, washing bed sheets once a week is the ideal routine for maintaining a clean and comfortable sleep environment. Over several nights, sheets collect sweat, body oils, dead skin cells, dust, and allergens that can affect both hygiene and sleep quality. While a weekly wash is enough for many households, some situations call for more frequent laundering.
If you sweat heavily, sleep with pets, eat in bed, have allergies or asthma, live with a skin condition such as eczema, or are recovering from an illness, washing your sheets every three to four days is a better choice. Keeping bedding clean in these situations helps reduce allergens, bacteria, and other irritants that can interfere with healthy, restful sleep.
A clean bed involves more than just fresh sheets. Pillowcases should be washed every three to seven days, especially for people with oily skin or allergies. Duvet covers are best cleaned every one to two weeks, blankets every two to four weeks, comforters and duvets every two to three months, washable pillows every four to six months, and mattress protectors every one to two months—or sooner if they become soiled.
Simple daily habits can also help bedding stay cleaner between washes. Showering before bed, removing makeup, avoiding food in the bedroom, letting the bed air out each morning, and keeping pets off the mattress whenever possible all reduce dirt and moisture buildup. Vacuuming the mattress occasionally and following the care instructions on bedding labels will also help keep your bedding fresh, comfortable, and in good condition for longer.
