Nearly three decades after Princess Diana’s death, photographs of her and King Charles continue to attract attention. One particular image taken at Balmoral in 1981 has puzzled royal watchers because Charles appears dramatically taller than Diana. In the photograph, Diana stands beside Charles while he seems to tower over her, creating the impression of an unusually large difference in height.

The image becomes even more intriguing when compared with other photographs of the couple. In some pictures, Charles appears considerably taller, while in others, the two seem much closer in height. However, the explanation for the famous Balmoral photograph is much simpler than it first appears. Other photographs from the same setting show that Diana was actually sitting on a bench. Her seated position makes Charles appear dramatically taller, creating a much greater visual difference than there would be if both were standing.

Photography can easily affect how we perceive height. Camera angles, posture, perspective, footwear, and the position of each person can all make someone look taller or shorter. What initially seems like a mysterious royal height difference therefore has a straightforward explanation: Diana’s position on the bench significantly changed the appearance of the photograph.
