The Simple Bed-Making Trick

Making the bed may seem like a simple morning routine, but a few small techniques can give it a neat, hotel-inspired appearance. Most beds are made with a fitted sheet, a top sheet, and a comforter, quilt, or duvet. Starting with a smooth, tightly fitted bottom sheet creates a wrinkle-free foundation that makes the rest of the bedding look more polished and comfortable.

One detail many people overlook is the placement of the top sheet. If you’re using one, the finished or patterned side should face down when you first spread it over the bed. After placing the comforter or duvet on top, fold the upper edge of the sheet back over the bedding. This reveals the decorative side and creates the clean, layered look often seen in hotels. Folding the sheet and the top of the comforter back together once more adds an extra touch of elegance.

Pillows and accessories also help create a finished appearance. Arrange your sleeping pillows neatly, then add decorative pillows or cushions if you like. A folded throw blanket at the foot of the bed can introduce color, texture, and warmth, making the room feel more inviting without much effort.

Of course, there is no single “right” way to make a bed. Many people now skip the top sheet altogether, preferring a simpler bedding setup that’s easier to make and wash. Whether you choose a traditional layered style or a minimalist approach, the goal is the same: creating a clean, comfortable space that suits your personal preferences and helps your bedroom feel relaxing and welcoming.
