The Silent Health Risk Hiding in Your Lingerie Drawer: Are Your Bras Making You Sick?

Wearing the same bra multiple times without washing may seem harmless, but it can affect hygiene. Because bras sit directly against the skin, they absorb sweat, body oils, and dead skin cells throughout the day. Rewearing an unwashed bra can transfer that buildup back onto the skin, potentially causing irritation, odor, or discomfort.

To keep bras fresh, experts generally recommend avoiding wearing the same one on consecutive days. Rotating between several bras allows the fabric to recover its shape while giving trapped moisture time to evaporate. Most bras only need washing after every two or three wears, depending on activity level and how much you perspire.

Proper washing helps preserve both cleanliness and the life of the garment. Hand washing in cool water with a mild detergent is the gentlest option for delicate fabrics. If machine washing is necessary, placing the bra in a mesh laundry bag and using a gentle cycle can reduce wear. Air drying is recommended because high heat from dryers can weaken elastic fibers and alter the bra’s shape.

A well-fitting bra is just as important as proper care. Since body shape and size can change over time, regular fittings help ensure the right level of comfort and support. By rotating bras, washing them routinely, and checking the fit periodically, you can improve hygiene, extend the lifespan of your bras, and enjoy better everyday comfort.
