Today’s cars hide many of their secrets behind digital displays, buttons, and software. But decades ago, a single mysterious letter on a gear selector could make a noticeable difference in how a car drove. Tucked beside familiar positions like P, R, and D, the letter “E” represented an option that promised better fuel efficiency, even though many drivers were unsure exactly what it did.
Before modern software could automatically optimize fuel consumption, selecting “E” was a simple way for drivers to prioritize economy. The transmission would generally shift into higher gears sooner, keeping engine revs lower and reducing unnecessary strain. Acceleration became smoother and less aggressive, while the car was encouraged to use less fuel during everyday driving.
As automotive technology developed, the physical “E” gradually disappeared from many gear selectors. Its function was replaced by electronic systems, computer-controlled transmission strategies, and dedicated Eco buttons or driving modes. What once required a specific position on the gear lever could now be managed quietly by the car’s software.
Interestingly, the idea behind that old “E” has not disappeared. Modern electric vehicles often use similar concepts to maximize efficiency through energy-saving settings, regenerative braking, and battery-conscious driving. The technology has changed dramatically, but the basic goal remains the same: use energy more efficiently and travel farther with less waste.
