Megan seemed like the perfect babysitter for Ryan and his wife. She was reliable, kept the house clean, sent photos of their one-year-old son, and quickly earned their trust. Still, the parents sometimes noticed that their son seemed unusually sleepy when they returned from work. One afternoon, delivery driver Andre noticed something strange near their trash cans. After seeing a medication bottle, he returned to the porch and used a piece of cardboard to send a message through their broken Ring camera: “CHECK YOUR TRASH CAN.”
Alarmed, the parents rushed home and searched the garbage. Hidden underneath were medication bottles, including children’s cough medicine and a sleep aid, along with a pharmacy bag bearing Megan’s name. They immediately checked on their son and found him unconscious and frighteningly limp in his crib. Megan insisted that the hospital wasn’t necessary, but the parents ignored her and rushed him to emergency care, where doctors determined that he had been exposed to a sedating medication.
Megan eventually admitted that she had been giving the child small amounts of medication to make him sleep whenever he resisted his naps, simply because it made caring for him easier. Police began investigating, while Andre explained that he had seen Megan carrying the trash bag and noticed a medicine bottle fall from it. Since the camera’s microphone was broken, he couldn’t warn the family verbally and improvised with the written message. Fortunately, the child recovered.
The experience completely changed the parents’ trust in caregivers and made them much more cautious about medications around their son. A month later, Andre returned with another delivery, and this time the camera was working. He asked, “I hope the little guy is doing okay.” Ryan replied, “He is. Because of you.” Sometimes, a small observation and a simple warning can make an enormous difference.
