The Bedtime “Hack” You Didn’t Know You Needed: Why Some People Make Their Beds “Upside Down”

Have you ever seen a bed that looked slightly “backward” and wondered whether the sheets were put on incorrectly? In many cases, there’s actually a clever reason. Some people intentionally place the top sheet upside down because it can make the bed look neater and more comfortable.

The trick becomes noticeable when you fold the top of the sheet over the comforter. By placing the sheet upside down, the decorative or finished side appears on the fold instead of the plain underside. This creates a cleaner, more polished look that resembles the way beds are often styled in hotels.

There can also be a comfort benefit. On some sheets, the stitched hem or seam can feel slightly rough against your neck or face. Turning the sheet around can position the smoother side against your skin, making the top of the bed feel softer while you sleep.

It’s a tiny adjustment that takes only a few seconds and costs absolutely nothing. The next time you make your bed, try placing the top sheet upside down and folding the upper section over your comforter. You might be surprised by how much better the bed looks—and how much more comfortable it feels.
