Snake Inside Home: Stay Calm and Act Safely

Finding a snake inside your home can be frightening, but snakes usually enter houses while searching for food, shelter, warmth, or protection from extreme weather. Small gaps around doors, windows, pipes, garages, and foundations can provide easy access. A home may also become more attractive when rodents or insects are present, since they can provide a ready source of food.

If you discover a snake indoors, stay calm and keep your distance. Do not try to grab, corner, or chase it. Keep children and pets away from the area, and close nearby doors if you can do so safely. Because identifying a snake incorrectly can be dangerous, the safest option may be to contact a local wildlife professional who can determine what type of snake it is and remove it safely.

Once the snake has been removed, inspect your home for possible entry points. Check gaps around doors, windows, vents, pipes, and the foundation, then seal openings where appropriate. Outside, clear away piles of wood, leaves, debris, and other places where snakes might hide. It is also worth checking for rodents and insects, since reducing their presence can make your property less appealing to snakes.

The experience is a good reminder that panic can make an unexpected situation worse. A snake inside the house does not automatically mean there is an immediate threat, but it should be treated with caution. Keep people and pets away, avoid disturbing the animal, and seek professional help when necessary. Simple steps such as sealing gaps, keeping the yard tidy, and addressing pest problems can also reduce the chances of another unexpected visitor.
