Most people rarely notice which side clothing buttons are placed on, yet there is a traditional difference between men’s and women’s garments. Men’s shirts and jackets typically have buttons on the right side, while women’s clothing usually places them on the left. Although this detail often goes unnoticed, it has remained a common feature of clothing design for centuries.

The origin of this tradition dates back to the 19th century, when women’s fashion was much more elaborate. Dresses often included corsets, petticoats, and multiple layers, making dressing a time-consuming process. Many wealthy women were assisted by maids, and since most people are right-handed, buttons were positioned on the wearer’s left side to make fastening garments easier for the person helping them dress.

Men’s clothing, by contrast, was generally simpler, and most men dressed themselves. Placing buttons on the right side made garments more convenient to fasten independently. As clothing manufacturing became standardized, these practical differences evolved into lasting design conventions, even after the original reasons were no longer relevant.

Today, the placement of buttons is largely a matter of tradition rather than necessity. Modern clothing is designed for people to dress themselves, and many brands have begun to question whether the historical distinction is still meaningful. Even so, the centuries-old convention continues to appear on many garments, serving as a small reminder of fashion’s historical roots.
