Is $10 a good tip for $50?

Tipping has become one of those everyday decisions that can spark surprisingly strong opinions. For some diners, 20% is the standard, while others adjust the amount depending on the quality of service. Some people even believe that tips should only be given when the experience is exceptional.

One diner shared a different approach: they always tip at least 20%, even when the bill is expensive, and on exceptional occasions, they have left as much as 50%. They also continue tipping when food is delayed or arrives cold, believing the server may not be responsible for problems in the kitchen or for being assigned too many tables.

For this diner, the only real exception is genuinely rude behavior from the server. They recall encountering that situation only once. Their reasoning is that many servers rely heavily on tips, so they don’t believe a worker should lose a tip because of problems they couldn’t control.

Ultimately, tipping habits are personal, and there is no single approach that everyone follows. Some people use a fixed percentage, others base their tip on the experience, and some believe restaurants should simply pay higher wages. This diner doesn’t judge anyone else’s choices—they simply follow what feels right to them. When they decide to tip, they tip generously. What about you: do you usually tip 20%, more, less, or only when the service is excellent?
