Found Tiny White Pellets in Your Home? They Could Be a Warning Sign

Old homes have a unique charm, with vintage tiles, wooden fixtures, exposed brick, and other details that give them character. But along with that charm can come unexpected mysteries. One of the most puzzling is discovering tiny white pellets scattered across a floor, counter, or piece of furniture. They may look like grains of rice, sesame seeds, or other harmless debris, but in some cases, they can be a sign of something much more serious.

Those small pellets may be termite droppings, commonly known as frass. Drywood termites live inside wooden structures and create small openings through which they push their waste. The pellets can accumulate beneath infested wood and often resemble tiny grains or coarse particles. Because termites continue producing waste as they feed, the pellets may return even after the area has been cleaned, making repeated appearances an important warning sign.

Older houses and rental properties can be particularly vulnerable because termites may remain hidden inside wooden beams, furniture, wall spaces, cabinets, and other structures. Previous moisture damage, aging wood, or a lack of recent pest inspections can create favorable conditions for an infestation. Since termites can damage wood from the inside, visible signs may not appear until the problem has been present for some time.

If you discover these mysterious pellets, it is worth documenting where they appear and taking photographs before cleaning everything away. Homeowners or property managers should be notified, and a professional pest inspection can help determine whether termites are present. While old homes can offer plenty of character and history, unexpected signs like these should not simply be brushed aside. Those tiny pellets could be a clue to hidden damage that needs attention before it becomes a much larger and more expensive problem.
