Does Unplugging Appliances Save Electricity?

Many household appliances continue using small amounts of electricity even when they appear to be turned off. This hidden energy use, often called “phantom load” or “vampire power,” comes from devices with standby modes, digital displays, remote controls, or external power adapters. While the power draw from a single device is usually small, the combined effect of several electronics can add noticeably to your electricity bill over time.

Fortunately, you don’t need to unplug everything in your home to save energy. Focus on devices that commonly use standby power, such as older televisions, gaming consoles, desktop computers, coffee makers with digital clocks, and phone chargers that are not in use. Smart power strips are also a convenient option because they automatically cut power to connected devices when the main device is switched off.

Some appliances, however, are designed to stay plugged in and should not be unplugged regularly. Refrigerators, freezers, washing machines, and other modern household appliances are generally energy efficient and operate best when left connected. Concentrating on the biggest sources of standby power is a more practical and effective approach than unplugging every appliance.

Saving electricity doesn’t have to involve major lifestyle changes. Small, consistent habits—such as switching off unused electronics, unplugging devices that sit idle for long periods, and using smart power strips—can help reduce unnecessary energy use and lower electricity costs over time. Making informed choices is often the simplest way to save energy while keeping your home convenient and efficient.
