Doctor reveals health issues hidden in your nails

Your nails do much more than protect your fingertips. Because they rely on a steady supply of nutrients, oxygen, and healthy blood circulation, changes in their appearance can sometimes reflect what is happening inside your body. Experts note that nail growth is closely linked to how well your body absorbs nutrients, making nails an early indicator of certain health problems.

One change to watch for is Beau’s lines, which are deep horizontal grooves that develop when nail growth temporarily stops. These lines can appear after severe illness, high fever, infections such as COVID-19, chemotherapy, or other major physical stress. Although they often grow out over time, recurring or persistent grooves should be evaluated by a healthcare professional.

Another possible warning sign is clubbing, where the nails curve downward and the fingertips become enlarged. This change develops gradually and may sometimes be associated with heart or lung conditions. If clubbing appears along with symptoms such as chest pain, swelling in the legs, or unusual fatigue, it is important to seek medical advice. While some people naturally have this nail shape, a sudden change deserves attention.

Other nail changes can also reveal underlying issues. Spoon-shaped nails, which curve inward, are commonly linked to iron-deficiency anemia and may be accompanied by pale skin, headaches, or shortness of breath. Small dents or pits in the nails are often associated with skin conditions such as psoriasis, eczema, or alopecia areata. Although these changes are not always serious, persistent or unexplained nail abnormalities should be assessed by a doctor to identify and treat any underlying condition early.
