Before You Finish Cleaning Your Bathroom, Make Sure

Cleaning the bathroom usually means focusing on visible areas such as the mirror, sink, shower, and toilet bowl. But there is another area that often gets overlooked for years: the inside of the toilet tank. Hidden behind the lid, the tank can collect mineral deposits, dirt, and discoloration along the waterline, especially in homes with hard water.

Because the tank is involved in every flush, buildup can eventually affect the toilet’s components and overall appearance. For many households, giving the tank a thorough cleaning about every six months can be a useful routine. Homes with hard water or consistently humid conditions may need to clean it more often because mineral deposits can accumulate more quickly.

Before cleaning, turn off the toilet’s water supply using the valve near the base of the toilet. Then flush the toilet to empty most of the water from the tank. Once the tank is empty, you can inspect the interior and gently remove visible mineral buildup or residue without damaging the working components.

The toilet tank may be out of sight, but that doesn’t mean it should be ignored. Adding it to your regular bathroom-cleaning routine can help keep the toilet’s internal components cleaner and reduce buildup over time. A quick check every few months can also help you notice problems before they become more difficult to deal with.
